ELECTION DAY 1860
SESQUICENTENNIAL OPEN DISCUSSION
On Saturday, November 6, 2010, from 10:00-12:00 the group will discuss Lincoln's Election as President on the 150th anniversary of Election Day 1860. Was it the most important election in American history? What were the ingredients of Lincoln's victory? What were the strengths and weaknesses of the other candidates - Stephen A. Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell? What caused the Democratic Party split? Did presidential election politics precipitate the Civil War and the end of African-American slavery?
The discussion will be held at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1313 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC. The church's History Committee is co-hosting the event, and the sanctuary (Lincoln pew, stained glass window), Lincoln Parlor (Emancipation document, Gurley portrait, desk and settee), and John Quincy Adams Room (Mary Lincoln letters, Lincoln desk set, etc.) will be available for viewing.
